Hi Everyone!

Making Waves McMaster is a non-for-profit club that provides one-on-one swimming instruction for visually impaired children between the ages of 3-18.. Our mission is to help these children develop basic swimming skills and water safety knowledge, as well as increase their comfort levels in water environments. Through one-on-one instruction and special teaching techniques, they will be given the opportunity to learn valuable aquatic skills. These children will also be given the opportunity to enrich their social skills and form new friendships.

The session runs for 8 weeks starting September 26 and continue every Saturday from 12-1 p.m at the swimming pool at the David Braley Athletic Center. We feel that this program greatly benefits the Hamilton community by enriching the lives of children with special needs, as well as offering an opportunity for university students to participate in a gratifying volunteer experience.

We are in search of student volunteers that are interested and committed to our club. If you are interested, please visit our website at www.makingwavesmcmaster.org for more details or send us an email at mcmasterblindswim@gmail.com!

See you all in September!

Campus Health Centre Agrees with McMaster Students: Access to Affordable Oral Contraceptives will be Reinstated by September!

The McMaster Students Union is delighted to announce that students will continue to have access to affordable oral contraceptives come September, despite the temporary cancellation of the program by the Campus Health Centre (CHC). The CHC and the MSU have collaborated on a short-term solution, wherein students will be able to receive oral contraceptives below standard pharmacy rates and physicians will have more flexibility in prescribing the product that most suits the client’s needs.

The MSU and the CHC will continue to work on a long-term plan that will ensure this service will not find itself on the chopping block in years to come. The MSU would like to thank the Campus Health Centre for their good-faith efforts to remedy the situation in partnership with the MSU, as well as their prompt responses to our communications. We are very pleased that economic constraints and uncertainties will not outweigh the health and wellbeing of McMaster students.

Over the summer months, the MSU has been involved in discussion with the Campus Health Centre regarding the dispensing of oral contraceptives. Campus Health has decided to cease the oral contraceptive program for the foreseeable future. The MSU has made it very clear that this is unacceptable to the students of McMaster University. Students are paying more than ever to the University and it is of concern that certain departments are cutting the amount of services that they had previously offered.

The MSU has offered multiple alternatives and support solutions, however we have not received positive feedback on these fronts. As a result, the MSU is expecting to meet with Student Affairs (the division in which the Campus Health Centre is under) to attempt to resolve the issue. Should the matter not be resolved soon, the MSU will be seeking the support and contribution from all its members to identify and express their concerns on the matter. Below were some commonly asked questions regarding this issue which have been kindly brought forth by the Silhouette

What am I already paying for?

Students pay a mandatory $53.39 fee to subsidize the operations of the Campus Health Centre located in the basement of the Student Centre. This fee allows the Health Centre to run a few core functions that include health awareness and promotional campaigns, a walk in-clinic and previously, the dispensing of low cost oral contraceptives. Students do NOT have to opportunity to opt-out of this fee. As of now, the Campus Health Centre has ceased their dispensing practices even though students continue to pay the same fees.

Why did they stop?

Campus Health has stated on their website that “The CHC is no longer able to purchase many brands of birth control pills at a reduced cost. As health care providers, out primary interest must be in prescribing the most appropriate medication for each individual.”

In our opinion, although the CHC can no longer offer birth control pills at the same rate they previously charged, they still have the opportunity to charge a rate lower than that of pharmacies and other private clinics. This is because they are labelled as a family dispensing centre and thus are given a deal on the birth control they purchase. Students should understand that even with rising prices, the CHC can still offer a reduced price on birth control when compared to other establishments.

Can they stop? - Are they not a student service?

Campus Health would say that they are not ceasing to provide any services, rather they are just cutting out one of their core operations. As students pay $53.39 to the University to provide all their core operations, it does not seem appropriate that they can cut some of their practices without reducing the fees that students pay.

Was this a matter of Campus Health losing money, or not making enough?

After discussion, the Campus Health Centre advised the MSU that they were incurring losses on this service.

Although it is not in the best interest of any institution to lose money, the CHC is funded by student fees, which should in turn subsidize some of those losses. In our mind, it is irrelevant whether or not the Centre realizes marginal losses or gains on one of its operations. From the perspective of the MSU, students pay for the service - which means the CHC has a responsibility to make it work. These losses should be recuperated by the contribution that every student makes through their ancillary fees. If the mandate for the Health Centre was to make money on its core functions, then why do students continue to pay $53.39 to keep the Centre running?

If you have any additional questions regarding the MSU’s stance, please email your SRA representative or any of the Board of Directors. Furthermore, should you feel strongly on the matter, please visit the Campus Health Centre, or call them at 905-525-9140 ext. 27700 to voice your concerns.

sirchadlington on "Tips For Buying A Laptop (part 2)"

Well the last article was about more of the broader characteristics to consider when first deciding a type of laptop to purchase. This one is more about what you will face when you finally enter the heated shopping floor full of tech sales urging you that their weekly special laptop is the best thing ever and the extended warranty will save cats from trees or some other ludicrous marketing mumbo jumbo.

1. Brand: Many people associate brand to a particular quality. Apple = quality and customer service, Dell = mass marketed laptops, IBM/Lenovo = Business laptops. To a point, these are valid assumptions but do not assume this to be the absolute truth. Each model is different and each series has their specific attributes. Remember to do your research online using reputable sources or if better try using a friend’s machine if they have it.

2. Type: In the last few years, a few types of laptops have emerged. Make sure you choose the one that’s right for your purpose.

a. Netbook: Small and portable. Usually have good battery life but smaller screens (12” or smaller). No DVD drive. Most have the same specs (Intel Atom, Intel GMA950, 1GB RAM, 160GB HD) so not much variation there but see if your particular model has any special features like more RAM or maybe a nicer Atom processor (N280?) or a larger battery always help. Always try to buy the 6 cell or larger battery options as usually the biggest difference between netbooks are the battery life. An example is the Asus 1005HA.

b. CULV: Basically, a higher class netbook with more power and a bit more screen real estate (13.3” to 15.4”). A newer class of laptops that use a ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) processor. A still ambiguous class as there are not too many classified under this range, but generally slightly larger and faster than netbooks.. An example is the Acer Timeline.

c. Ultraportable: The ultimate performance to size machine. Usually pretty small (11” to 14”) but doesn’t skimp on features. Many have discrete/separate graphics cards able to handle light to medium gaming and extravagant designs to attract customers. The type of laptop you buy if you need size and cost is not as much a concern to you. Usually above $1000. An example is the Dell Studio XPS 13.

d. Consumer: The pinnacle of cost savings. Usually 14” to 15.4”. Contains more modest components comparable to the ultraportable but at a lower price. Has the lowest average price next to netbooks. Usually not as nicely “designed” as ultraportables but built to last and be mass produced. The kind you see on sale all the time in Best Buy flyers for $599. Take special care to inspect the casing of these laptops as many a time, the screen component is not re-enforced and the screen can easily damage. An example would be the Toshiba Satellite L305.

e. Multimedia/Desktop Replacement/Gaming: Screen size rules all. (16” and up) These are laptops designed with speed in mind. The most heavily spec’ed out machines with dedicated video cards and fast processors to chew through any material you throw at it. The larger screen lets you experience multimedia the way it was meant to be seen. ...

As a first year, I can share the pain of going to university and being terrified of new experiences, new challenges, making friends, etc. and that being said, I feel that being terrified of math is NOT a way to begin the first year.

So, how does one get over his or her phobia of math? The first way to convince you that you’ll be fine in university math is to take these common quotes and break it down:

“But I suck at math!” or “Math is stupid!”

This is a poor attitude towards math, not a fact. As a matter of fact, I said I sucked at math for years until I realized that math is not complicated. Now I’m majoring in math! How does one get over this? Tell yourself you can and find someone willing to help you! You’re in university now! This is the big leagues! If you think you’ll suck at something, you will!

Think you’ll be a burden? Yes, I don’t blame you. Sometimes you will be, but you don’t always have to ask someone who knows it all! How about someone who is having the same difficulty! Talk it out, figure out what you know and what you don’t understand and together, find a solution..

As we all know, there are many changes that are going to be done to the new venue, aside from the renovations. The venue is undergoing a re-branding process and some of things that we are planning to improve are the events, the food and the drinks. Let us know if there is something in particular that you want to see on the menu or if you have any suggestions for drink specials. We want the menu improved so that it's healthier and students will have a variety of food options to choose from. We also want to improve the overall feel of bar nights at the venue. Let us know if you have suggestions for bar nights or themes. Post here or feel free to email me at elshaif@mcmaster.ca. I'm curious to hear all your ideas...
