Thank you for reply, 230313. I'll follow the recommendations and I do appreciate your input.

Is seems that only EDC is asking for the designation and I sent them my resume couple of times with no replies. That's a bit of funny for me because I am not a young person without experience looking for my first job. I've been doing Trade finance for more than 10 years for a European bank and have 16 years of banking experience.

Goinglobal.com is a good resource for people who are willing to work abroad. I personally don't want because I have my family here and Canada is an exporting country so I think here supposed to be positions for CITPs. Canadian jobs are the same as at another job search resources.
But the problem is that employers in Canada do not know they would benefit of hiring CITPs for their Int'l Trade needs so that's why I consider the designation is a bit of useless right now.

I'll keep trying to find anything :)

Hey 270453,

If all you are doing is using your designation to search on workopolis, you aren't using even a tenth of what the designation can offer. Have you used the Goinglobal.com career portal? It's free as part of your CITP dues just log into the FITT site to get at it. It offers way more international jobs than anything you would find on workopolis and even lists jobs in Canada plus all kinds of job search resources. Searching for a job with just CITP at this time may not turn up results, but it will definitely help when it comes to sending in your resume or interviewing. And keep in mind, the vast majority of jobs are never posted to these sites, you'll find a job by getting out there and networking. Are you also using the FITT member directory to serach where else CITPs work and talking with those people to see what advice they have to offer? CITPs are their own network so tap into it! And at the top of this form the other day there was a joh posting specifically with CITP in it. EDC now asks for CITP preferred in all of its accouont manager jobs too.

Bottom line is this, there are good benefits. You just have to take advantage of them and work them.

Hello all,

I don't know guys if CITP really helped you, I've found it somewhat useless so far. Even more, - I do believe I made a mistake spending time to get certified. Now I am paying the fees just because I hope the situation hypothetically would become better in 5 or 10 years and when you put CITP or C.I.T.P. as a keyword at workopolis.com or monster.ca you would get a result...
I am thinking of getting CMA designation now. At least it shows 1216 results at workopolis comparing to zero for CITP.

Frustration is the word. It seems to me I was too naive when listened for FITT people describing strong advantages of getting the designation. They were just sales persons.

Based upon my more than 10 years of practical trading experience with gulf countries , I would like to add the followings :

1. All new entrants should consider conducting SWOT Analysis ( strength , weakness , opportunity & threat) before deciding any market entry strategy & brand positioning .

2. Dubai is a perfect example of trading hub as it serves GCC countries , Africa & CIS countries and is a origion of re-export to mentioned destinations . Major chunck of export to Dubai is re-exported .

3. Operating through local FTZ ( Free Trade zone) , like Dubai FTZ , Sharjah FTZ , Fujirah FTZ etc might be a good option for some companies . The goods stays in your(Sellers) contol & not buyer , get better price realization , no credit to the buyer , deliveries off the shelf & access the whole of re-export market .

Any questions feel free to contact me at www.ThinkExport.com / jaas@shaw.ca

Thanks to everyone who attended the first part of our "Global Business Essentials" Webinar series.

During the discussion, a question was raised on the topic of "trade hubs". Our presenter, Alexander Malaket, was kind enough to forward the information below on this particular topic.

If anyone has any further questions or input on this, or any Webinar-related topic, we would love to read it!
--------------------------------------------------------------
A quick response to the question that was raised today about what I referred to as "trade hubs" such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai and others. Searching on "Export Hubs", one can quickly find information on hubs in China, including Guangdong and the Yangtze River Delta near Shanghai, or the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in Hong Kong, as well as numerous other markets, from the UAE to Australia, the Mercosur region and beyond.

I did not locate a single, comprehensive reference text/article on the subject, but there is enough out there - from solid sources - to allow for analysis and a better appreciation for such markets, and for the targeting of goods in those markets. Searches by country, or by region, will yield additional insight.

A couple of illustrative examples:

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC): http://www.hktdc.com/info/mi/a/hkip/en/1X006NJK/1/Hong-Kong-Industry-Profiles/Import-and-Export-Trade.htm

Middle East Technology News: http://www.itp.net/578849-uae-still-the-main-hub-for-re-export-sales

Cisco on Technology Re-Exports and US Controls: http://www.cisco.com/web/about/doing_business/legal/global_export_trade/docs/Export_Re-Export_Guidance.pdf

US Department of Commerce on Re-Export Controls: http://www.bis.doc.gov/licensing/bis_reexport_controls.pdf

As a general suggestion, if someone is interested in a particular region or market as a local hub, I would advise checking with DFAIT and/or with that country's diplomatic and commercial representatives, given that efforts to position as a local/regional trade hub or access point are often advanced through public sector initiatives and explicit policy/trade strategy. That is certainly the case in Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai.

The hiring company most likely would need to obtain approval from HRSDC prior to hiring an international applicant. This might be a long and sometimes complicated process. Not many companies are willing to go through it, but in some cases, if the applicant is considered an asset to the company they would.

Bad publicity for Apple - An opportunity to appreciate the challenges of managing a large supply chain? Or, evidence of corrupt corporate ethics?

"Apple admits using child labour"
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/7330986/Apple-admits-using-child-labour.html

I was working before I was 15. The issue for me is the repeated identification of poor working conditions. One of the big challenges for any global corporation is holding all points of their supply chain accountable. Personally, I hope that bad publicity like this forces Apple to tighten-up on their 3rd party manufactures/partners.

What are your thoughts?

How about updates and current information regarding logistics and trades (globally)? This will truly be a boost in everybody's daily tasks...

APICS has certifications like CSCP, CPIM, etc. They also have bookstore and magazine (both printed and digital) which is free for members. APICS is internationally recognized and hope that we can all make FITT the same or more than what APICS can do now.

Back to the Basics: The Path to International Trade Success
Market Research and Marketing

This month we’re exploring a topic that is critical for success when working in international markets—market research and marketing, although often undervalued, these two ares of practice are “the lifeblood of global competitiveness.”

"Today’s ultra-competitive global business environment demands that the significance of marketing within the organization be heightened… High-quality and -value products and services may now come from anywhere. The marketing approach is one of the most important means of transcending these sales challenges and of taking maximum advantage of the opportunities presented by the current global economy."1

Marketing connects your customers and clients with your products and/or services. As such, understanding and staying current on marketing and market research best practices is essential. One of the benefits of your membership with FITT is having access to a variety of business templates including international marketing resources, covering topics such as:

    * How to obtain brand loyalty
* International market research topics
* Sources of market intelligence
* Marketing plan outline
* What the customer cares about and what to highlight

Be sure to take advantage of these resources. Even if you don’t work directly in marketing, chances are there are components of your work that are affected by marketing efforts. Understanding the larger picture helps to create a consistent direction/focus within an organization, as all departments are better able to compliment the marketing-based expectations of customers.

How do you see marketing at work in relation to your role within your organization? Has there been a shift in focus or direction from marketing departments in the last year? In the last five years? Take a moment and share your experiences, thoughts, and arguments here.

I'm thinking of open an online clothing shop on ebay, you know, to sell and express the products from my supplier to my customer, no need to get my own inventory. The first thing is to find a reliable supplier, and I find micsourcing.com is pretty awesome. all wholesale prices for those clothing, so great!

I have been a CITP for the past 2 years. I use the designation on my business card, all of my promotional material, website and especially on my CV, which is really handy when I bid on international projects. I have found that it can make a difference when the "required expertise" is for credentials which I do not have - MBA for example. I was recently added to the roster of a foreign management consulting firm. I would not have had the confidence to submit my CV had it not been for the CITP next to my name, especially when their designations included PhD, MBA, MSc, etc... As the CITP designation is not as widely know, good idea to add a little descriptive paragraph and link to the right page on the FITT website.

There is a great community of CITPs and FITT members out there and we can all help each other. We just need to talk to each other more, and this discussion forum is a great place to do that for sure.

I am a new FITT member and have been looking forward to be CITP designated. Although I have more than 11 years logistics management experience, I prefer to go through the ACADEMIC path knowing there is much to learn. Taking my first course after the Chinese New Year will be very beneficial to me. And, this is one of the reasons I decided to join FITT. Forums are helpful. I've been browsing the forum and have not seen any sharing of experiences or advice to daily works/problems/issues encountered at work. Information and sharing... are some of the best assets of organizations.

Glad to see that the topic of "Trade in Services" is in the Members Forum. I have been exporting my services for most of my international career. In fact, I meet so many people who are also exporters of services, but don't realize it. You can actually export without leaving your home country. If someone from a foreign country pays you for services in your own home country, you are technically exporting. For anyone who is interested, below is a list of the most commonly exported services. For the full list, go to: http://www.wto.org/english/tratop_e/serv_e/serv_e.htm
Accountancy
Advertising
Architecture and Planning
Audio-visual
Business Process Outsourcing
Construction and related
Design services
Education and Training
Engineering
Environmental services
Event Management
Finance and Investment
Health-related
Information Technology services
Legal Services
Marketing and Communications
Management Consulting
Packaging services
Publishing services
Translation
Transportation and Logistics
Travel-related …and many more

I would be interested in hearing from others who are exporting their services. Always looking for examples and success stories to incorporate into our "services exporting" workshops.
