Hi John,

The FITTskills program and Going Global suite are both available in English and French.

In Canada, our designation is known as the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) which, in French, is the Professionnel accrédité en commerce international (PACI).

In the US and EU, the designation is registered as the FITT International Business Professional (FIBP) which, in French, is the FITT Professionnel en affaires internationales (FPAI).

That said, our members are active in dozens of countries around the world and our list of international partners who are offering FITT training is continuously growing.

KiethMyer on "A manufacturer of electronic appliances purchases small hybrid circuit boards?"

A manufacturer of electronic appliances purchases small hybrid circuit boards from an outside vendor. The circuits are shipped in large lots, with several thousand circuit boards per lot. When each lot is received, a random sample of 40 of the circuit boards is selected and tested to see if the circuitry performs correctly. If more than 3 of the circuit boards in the sample fail the testing, then the manufacturer rejects the entire lot and ships it back to the vendor.

Suppose that 10% of the circuit boards in a newly shipped lot are defective. Using the sampling plan described above, calculate the probability that this lot will be accepted by the appliance manufacturer. Round your answer to at least three decimal places.

Could anyone explain to me how to do this problem or at least show me the steps.

Thank you!

I am very unsatisfied with FITT. I feel like I wasted 1 year of my life I could've put towards an MBA, or another useful designation. This course was useless. They should have an internship component. No one has ever heard of CITP.

Some kind of education...?

I would imagine that a business degree would help. I think that too many people who have taken the course do not have a business degree.

But out of all the people I took the courses with only 1-2 actually had a business degree.
Most had no relevant experience as well.

But FITT will take their money.

Nobody is tracking these students. There are NO statistics. Why is that? Why show what a waste of money and time it is for MOST people to take these courses?

I am aware of the value of the FITT course in Japan. Zero. Yet they have roomfuls of Japanese students take the course, why is that? To make money. So long as the money keeps rolling in FITT will do nothing about it.

There are too many "schools" and "institutes" out there that are more interested in their students wallets than the students themselves.

Most people are "starting" with FITT and going nowhere. Is FITT in the business of selling "hope"?

Hi Adanac,

I would agree with you that FITT training or the CITP is not a way to get your start in international trade. To get a start in international trade a person must have either some kind of education or some kind of experience. For me I had a business degree and started my own company do small project work. I got into international work thanks to a client request to represent them at a trade show in the States. My international trade experience grew from that, but when I realised how complicated international trade is, I sought out the experts and FITT and the CITP kept coming up. I took the courses at UPEI and they were fantistic. I know of the schools you are talking about in Vancouver and know that most of those students are NOT getting certified like me because they can't. But they are taking the same international trade courses I did and hopefully for them, that will be their start. A person has to start somewhere to learn.

The CITP designation is not for everyone, so you are equally right that a buyer should beware...but neither is the CMA designation for everyone. For me, it's made a big difference, but I get out of it what I put into it...which is a lot. There are dozens of these designations in Canada so you have to choose the one that will best serve you. That's the beauty of choice. I heard the same "pitch" from the FITT folks, as I've heard from other professional associations. I took from it what I wanted and it's worked out so far.

And with the Goinglobal.com portal you can search for jobs in Canada too and there are hundreds.

You've reasied some great points and it's nice to see this forum being used strongly.

That sounds just... fine.
So FITT is working with the same people that they allowed in the first place to provide pseudo FITT credentials. How is that working out?

Can you give me any concrete examples about how things have changed?

My original question stands.
How many people WITHOUT experience in international trade have found the FITT course useful to get their foot in the door?

I believe that too many people think that FITT accreditation is a way to get one's start in international trade. IT ISN'T.

Like I said before. "Buyer Beware."

I'm glad to see such a lively thread!

Currently, there is not one global standard for international trade professionals and holding a credential is not mandatory for those working in international trade.

However, as Canada's international trade sector council, FITT is working to bring a new level of accountability and professionalism to the pracise of international trade, both in Canada and abroad. In part, we support this effort by working with educational partners across Canada (and internationally) who deliver content that meets competency standards and that is also internationally applicable -- courses that present practical skills that can be applied to international trade careers whether you are working in Canada, Japan, or anywhere else.

As adanac notes, obtaining the CITP designation is not as simple as taking one course. Obtaining the CITP requires applicants to meet extensive competency standards (https://www.fitt.ca/citpcompetencies.htm) and demonstrate a minimum of one year of full-time work in international trade. Each application is thoroughly reviewed by the certification and accreditation committee. This process is in place to maintain the high standards that the CITP represents. Those that hold the designation, whether foreign to Canada or not, have demonstrated extensively their knowledge, experience, and dedication to improving international trade standards both within Canada and beyond.

So much for someone actually answering the question.

You took ONE course and got a CITP certificate? I don't think so.

By the way, FITT is NOT internationally accredited.

How about this fun fact.
There are "colleges" "schools" or whatever you like to call them, teaching FITT courses to foreign students, mostly Japanese in Vancouver.

Why would they take the course?

1. In Japan FITT is NOT recognized.
2. I know for some (if not most) students, the English level is too difficult to handle for such a course. Actually, an instructor of the course told me himself that the test was so hard a student started to cry during the test. The student was not a little girl.
That person should not have not been accepted into the course. Period.

So there are "colleges" that are permitting people to take FITT courses who can't handle the material. And some (perhaps most) of those people don't know that FITT is not recognized in their own country.

But they are let into the course and someone takes their money.

There are foreign students that pass the course.

Do you want to be "qualified" the same way those foreign students are "qualified" in the FITT course work?

By the way, if you have any doubts about what I wrote, make a few phone calls yourself to some of the "colleges" in B.C. that offer FITT courses and find out for yourself. And talk to an instructor of the program, not an administrator or salesman.

Buyer Beware.

After writing the exam first time and miserably failing in it I felt the same too. I cleared it in the second try. By the way Daniel, Congrats you did clear it. The questions, especially the final case study, multiple choices are way overboard and tough to crack. Even I agree with Daniel on that. I know it is tough to maintain high degree of standard, that too in an online exam. It would be very helpful if you could provide us with the answer key after the exam.

I am a new comer and I have tried the online exam recently. Like any other online examination it does seem to have its limitations. But must say I am very much pleased with it. I took my second test last week end and my score has shown improvement from the previous test. And as far as explaining more about the wrong questions are concerned I think it is better this way. I started searching for answers online I did learn many related stuffs. After all it is a non- profit venture, what more would you expect.

I just took a course in fitt and got citp certificate. I can’t begin to say how much I learned and how useful it was. It makes it all the more novel since it is non profit oriented and internationally accredited. I was new to this field of global marketing and without the certificate you can’t possibly do anything in Canada. And fitt is the only way to get the certificate in canda right? If it wasn’t for this online forum I really wouldn’t have gone ahead with the course. Thanks a lot.

I agree a lot with what 230313 is saying.

I also have found it difficult to find a trade related job in B.C.

FITT may help for those people who already have a job in international trade but for those without the experience it much more problematic.

If you take a look at the membership directory almost all the members have other qualifications that helped them get the job.

I would like to see a few examples of people who DID NOT have a degree in business, finance, economics, engineering, etc or who didn't work their way up an organization and THEN took the FITT course.

How many people WITHOUT experience in international trade have found the FITT course useful to get their foot in the door? NOT MANY.
